If you live in the Bay Area, you already know that moving is rarely as simple as loading a truck and driving to your new home.
A move from Palo Alto to San Jose, for example, may involve lease deadlines, apartment building rules, parking restrictions, elevators, and Bay Area traffic. Even a relatively short move can require more planning than you might expect.
But there is another question people often have when choosing a moving company:
Can I trust this company with my money and my belongings?
Unfortunately, that is a question worth asking.
Most moving companies may look professional when you first contact them, but problems can arise when pricing, services, timing, or responsibilities are not clearly explained upfront. In some cases, the warning signs do not appear until moving day, when it becomes much harder to change course.
So what should you look for before you hand over your deposit, give a moving company your address, and let a crew into your home?
We looked at five common situations that can cause problems during a move and compared them with experiences shared by One Move Movers customers throughout the Bay Area.
The goal is not to tell you to blindly trust one moving company.
Instead, we want to help you understand what to check, what questions to ask, and what to look for before you book any mover.
Here are five things every Bay Area homeowner or renter should check before hiring a moving company.
The Price Looks Good, Until Moving Day:
A moving quote can look simple when you’re comparing companies. But the price you see at the beginning doesn’t always tell the whole story.
The final cost can depend on the size of the move, stairs, access to the property, additional stops, packing services, and other details that can affect how the job is completed.
Before booking, don’t just ask for a price. Ask the mover to clearly explain what is included and what could cause the cost to change.
Here are a few questions worth asking:
- Is the estimate in writing?
- What services are included?
- Could stairs, difficult access, or long carries add to the cost?
- What happens if the move takes longer than expected?
- Are additional pickup or delivery stops charged separately?
- What paperwork will I receive before moving day?
California has specific requirements for household moving companies, including rules regarding estimates and moving agreements. Taking a few minutes to review the paperwork can help you understand what you’re agreeing to before moving day.
A real customer review: last-minute booking after a scam concern
This isn’t just a theoretical concern. One recent One Move Movers customer described a similar situation.
Carrie Stewart, September 6, 2026
“We were feeling we were about to be scammed by another moving company and booked One Move Movers at the last minute. The day before. Their prices are really fair. I had a nice conversation with Tony when booking them.”
Carrie went on to share that Domingo and his crew arrived on time and helped take the stress out of the move. She also mentioned that Domingo was sensitive to her situation and that the crew went above and beyond to make her feel taken care of.
The important part here isn’t simply that Carrie gave One Move Movers a positive review.
It’s why she booked them in the first place.
She had become concerned about another moving company and needed movers on very short notice. At that point, finding a company she felt comfortable trusting was just as important as finding an available moving date.
Her experience is one customer’s account, not a guarantee that every quote or move will be the same. But it gives prospective customers something concrete to think about when deciding what questions to ask before hiring a mover.
Before you book a Bay Area mover, make sure you understand the price and what is included before moving day, not while your belongings are already being loaded onto the truck.
Need Movers Tomorrow? Don’t Let the Deadline Make the Decision for You
Last-minute moves are common around the Bay Area. A lease ends, a new job starts, a closing date changes, or the movers you originally booked suddenly fall through.
When that happens, it’s tempting to call the first company that says, “Yes, we’re available tomorrow.”
But availability shouldn’t be the only thing you check.
Before you book, take a few minutes to check the company’s California credentials, recent reviews, written estimate, and moving terms.
Even when you’re under pressure, a few basic checks can help you avoid a much bigger problem later.
A real One Move Movers customer experience
Carrie Stewart – September 6, 2026
Carrie said she was worried she was “about to be scammed by another moving company” and booked One Move Movers the day before her move.
She mentioned: “Their prices are really fair. I had a nice conversation with Tony when booking them.”
She then said: “Domingo and his crew showed up on time and they completely took the stress out of moving.”
Carrie also shared that Domingo was sensitive to her situation and that the crew went above and beyond to make her feel taken care of.
That’s useful information when you’re researching a moving company. Her review touches on several things people often want to know when booking a mover at the last minute: Was the price reasonable? Was communication clear? Did the crew arrive on time? And how were they treated during a stressful move?
Her experience is one customer’s experience, not a guarantee of what every move will be like. But detailed reviews like this can give you a better idea of what previous customers experienced.
Need a mover quickly? Move quickly, but still take a few minutes to check who you’re hiring.
Will Your Belongings Be Handled Carefully?
This is one of the biggest concerns once moving day arrives and the crew starts carrying your belongings out of the house.
A sofa can be replaced. Family photos, heirlooms, artwork, and other personal belongings may not be so easy to replace.
Before the move, ask how the crew handles furniture, fragile items, and anything that needs extra care.
If you still have packing to finish, it’s also worth asking whether the movers can help with packing on moving day.
But when you’re comparing movers, reviews with details like the route, the crew, the actual problem, and what happened on moving day are far more useful than simply seeing a five-star rating.
Before you book, ask how they will handle your belongings, then look for reviews that show how they actually handled other people’s.
Our recent customers said
Avery Lewis – September 9, 2026
After moving from Palo Alto to San Jose, Avery said Sergio, Guillermo and Francisco were organized and efficient, and that they made sure the belongings arrived undamaged.
Donavon Hampton – August 21, 2026
Donavon said Mely, Cesar and Martin arrived on time and even helped with additional packing that wasn’t finished before the move. He also said none of his items were damaged and described the crew as professional and friendly.
These are real customer experiences, not a promise that every move will be identical.
But when you’re comparing moving companies, detailed reviews can tell you much more than a five-star rating alone. Look for reviews that explain what the move involved, what the crew actually did, and how they handled the challenges that came up on moving day.
Before you book, ask how your belongings will be handled.
Multiple Stops? Tell Your Movers Before Moving Day
Not every Bay Area move is simply one home to another.
You might have furniture at your current home, belongings in a storage unit, or items that need to be picked up from a family member’s house before everything goes to the final destination.
With Bay Area traffic, building access, parking restrictions, and loading rules to consider, multiple stops need to be planned in advance.
If that’s your situation, tell the mover about every pickup and delivery location before you book. Ask how the stops will be scheduled, how much time they may add, and whether they will affect your estimate.
The more information your mover has upfront, the easier it is to plan the day properly.
Our real customer experiences
Deborah Taylor – September 2, 2026
Deborah has used One Move Movers twice, and both moves involved multiple locations.
“From the beginning, this company was refreshingly communicative and supportive. The scheduling was easy. The paperwork was easy.”
She went on to say that both moves went “off without a hitch.”
That’s the kind of detail worth paying attention to when reading moving reviews.
Deborah wasn’t describing a straightforward A-to-B move. She had a more involved moving plan, yet she specifically highlighted how easy the scheduling and communication were.
Her experience is one customer’s account, but it shows why it’s worth looking for reviews that describe how a company handled the details of an actual move, rather than simply relying on a star rating.
If your move has multiple stops, tell your mover from the start so everyone is working from the same plan.
Pay Attention to How the Crew Treats You
Moving day can get stressful quickly. You’re dealing with boxes, deadlines, building rules, parking, and a hundred small things that need your attention at the same time.
That’s why reviews should tell you more than whether a company received five stars. Look for what customers say about how the crew communicated, listened, and responded when they needed extra help.
Our real customer experience:
Deborah Taylor – September 2, 2026
Deborah shared that she is disabled and described how the One Move Movers crew accommodated her during the move:
“As I’m disabled, they made sure I had a place to sit. They ask the right questions they helped me look in boxes and overall they were just fantastic.”
She also said: “Without Reservation I would highly recommend one move movers and I will use them again in the future.”
That’s a very different kind of review from simply saying “great movers.” It gives you specific details about what happened when a customer needed a little more patience, communication, and attention during the move.
When comparing moving companies, look for those details. Did the crew communicate clearly? Did they listen to the customer? Did they take the time to understand what was needed? How did they respond when something required extra attention?
Those details can tell you a lot more about the moving experience than a star rating alone.
Before You Book a Bay Area Moving Company, Check These 5 Things
You don’t need to spend hours researching a moving company. Start with these five simple checks:
1. Check the company’s California credentials.
Use the California Department of Consumer Affairs’ Bureau of Household Goods and Services to look up the moving company’s information and make sure you’re dealing with a properly registered mover.
2. Get the price in writing.
Don’t rely on a verbal quote or a number you received over the phone. Make sure you understand what is included, what isn’t included, and what circumstances could cause the final cost to change.
3. Read the actual reviews.
Don’t stop at the star rating. Look for reviews that include specific details about the move, such as the crew’s communication, arrival time, care of belongings, packing help, and how unexpected situations were handled.
4. Explain your move properly.
Give the mover as much information as possible before the estimate is finalized. Mention stairs, elevators, parking restrictions, long carries, multiple stops, storage units, oversized or heavy furniture, and any tight move-out or move-in deadlines.
The more accurate the information you provide, the better the mover can understand what your move will actually require.
5. Keep your documents.
Save your estimate, moving agreement, receipts, deposit information, and important communication with the moving company. Having everything in one place can make it much easier to review what was agreed upon if questions come up later.
What Can You Learn From Real Customer Experiences?
The recent One Move Movers reviews included here are meant to give you real examples of the kinds of things worth paying attention to when choosing a moving company.
Carrie Stewart booked One Move Movers at the last minute after becoming concerned about another moving company.
Avery Lewis moved from Palo Alto to San Jose and shared that his belongings arrived without damage.
Deborah Taylor used One Move Movers twice for moves involving multiple locations and described the scheduling and communication as easy.
She also shared how the crew accommodated her when she needed additional support during the move.
Donavon Hampton said the crew arrived on time, helped with unfinished packing, and handled his belongings carefully.
These are individual customer experiences. They aren’t a substitute for checking a moving company’s credentials, understanding the estimate, or reviewing the paperwork yourself.
But they can give you something useful that a generic statement like “professional movers” cannot.
They show you what actual customers noticed during their moves.
When reading reviews, look beyond the star rating. Pay attention to specific details about communication, punctuality, pricing, care of belongings, packing, and how the company handled unexpected situations.
