Tips to Consider When Moving With Children

Moving With Children

The One Move team rounded up some expert moving tips to create easy steps for you to have a stress free move when moving with children.

Have a family meeting about the move

Moving can be very scary, overwhelming, and/or difficult for children. Be sure to explain to them why you’re moving and the benefits of the move. Encourage them to share their thoughts and concerns while also sharing your excitement about the move to help them feel more at ease.

Involve your child(ren) in the moving process.

Get their input on potential new homes. Keep the lines of communication open and let them know that their opinion matters too! Things as simple as letting them choose the paint color for their new room could make a huge difference on their outlook of your new home and help make the transition fun and exciting!

If moving to a new school district, find out as much as you can about the new school, teacher, and classmates.

Try to meet the parents of the new classmates and set up play dates before the move. Let the new teacher know of any strengths or weakness your child(ren) may have that they should know about. You want to set your child up for success and help to make this transition for them as smooth and happy as possible.

 PARTY

If moving to a new school, city, or state, throw a party with current friends to allow your children to say their goodbyes, or rather their see you later. Likewise, plan a party to celebrate your new home once you are all packed and settled in. As mentioned several times, it is important to make the new move as exciting and happy as possible! Make use of all moving tips mentioned above.

During the Move …

· If possible, have them stay with a grandparent, sibling, or family friend . Keeping your child(ren) out of the moving process will help to keep you both less stressed.

· Keep a few of their favorite snacks and drinks easily accessible.

It’s easy to lose track of time during the moving process – kids may grow hungry and ornery. Having these snacks and drinks on hand will help to keep them happy and positive.

  • Make sure to have a pillow, blanket, and favorite stuffed animal set aside for each child as moving can be quite tiring for your little one(s).
  • For long distance moves, pack a kit for the car with drawing supplies, toys, games, and books to help keep your child(ren) entertained and distracted.
  • Create a small emergency box/kit to keep with you during the move with items such as any medication they may need/require, bandages, hand sanitizer, toiletries, disposable plate ware/cutlery, etc.

· If your child(ren) is/are around, make sure that they remain somewhere safe, as the front door will most likely be open. Try to keep them in one location out of the way where they can be seen at all times, such as a fenced in backyard or a play room.
