How To Help Seniors Pack For A Move

Pack For A Move

Whether downsizing after retirement or relocating, seniors all over the country are packing up and starting fresh for many reasons. Here are a few tips to help seniors pack and relocate in a smooth and efficient way.

Start early: It’s never too early to start downsizing. Even if the moving date or the exact destination has not been finalized, you can still start the preparation process. Begin by focusing on problem areas that tend to collect extra items like the attic, basements, garage or closets.

Pack For A Move

Break it into smaller tasks

Accomplishing a large task like moving or downsizing can be overwhelming if you view it as a whole.  When the job is broken down into smaller pieces, it becomes more manageable.  Often seniors have lived in the same home for years, so it may take some time to work through it all.

Hire help with packing and moving

The strain of packing an entire household is often too much for seniors to handle. A family member can assist with the packing process or talk to your moving company to discover your options. Professional packers not only take the stress out of moving, but they also will complete the job much faster.

Prepare for moving day

Pack a suitcase as if traveling for a few days. Remember to pack any medication and important documents that they will need.  Even if the move is a short distance away, it is helpful to have everything that is needed for the next few days contained in a suitcase, instead of buried in several different boxes.

Whether you’re helping older family members transition to a care facility, or you’re a senior who’s downsizing or transitioning, moving as a senior comes with special considerations. Planning is key to making the move as easy, safe and comfortable as possible.
